Ecuador’s continued conflict over oil drilling, indigenous rights and biodiversity

Last month, Ecuador’s government approved permits for oil drilling in the Yasuní National Park. The drilling will be carried out by a subsidiary of the national oil company, Petroamazonas and will start in 2016.

In mid-February 2014, Nancy Birdsall and Jonah Busch, of the Center for Global Development, visited Georgetown in Guyana. Their visit was part of CGD project looking at how well performance-based payments for forest conservation are working in Guyana, Brazil and Indonesia.
