Just days before a meeting to resolve the crisis in the Embobut Forest, the Kenya Forest Service torched 30 houses

Over the past decade, Kenya Forest Service guards have repeatedly evicted people living in the Embobut Forest in the Cherangany Hills. On 25 February 2015, guards torched more than 30 houses belonging to the Sengwer indigenous people and destroyed school books, clothes and cooking utensils.

Suruí leaders travel to Brasília to get their message across: “We request the immediate suspension of this carbon project”

In 2012, after the Suruí Forest Carbon Project was validated by the Verified Carbon Standard and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard, this was “pathbreaking news for the project … and the progress of REDD worldwide,” according to Forest Trends.

The controversy surrounding the Suruí Forest Carbon Project in Brazil continues. In January 2015, leaders of the Paiter-Suruí wrote a “Note of Clarification” in which they called for the end of the project. The Metareilá Association, the organisation that runs the Suruí Forest Carbon Project, has now responded with a defence of the project.
