Chico Mendes 30 years on: Against the false solutions of green capitalism

At 5.45 pm on 22 December 1988, Chico Mendes, Brazilian rubber tapper and trade union leader was assassinated in the doorway of his home in Xapuri, Acre. Two meetings in Xapuri this month show that Mendes legacy is disputed.

Friends of the Earth International held a press conference at the COP24 UN climate meeting in Katowice earlier today. Last year, at COP23 in Bonn, Meena Raman of Friends of the Earth Malaysia said, “We come every year to the COP feeling like a broken record.”

Before the UN climate meeting started in Katowice last week, the Polish government put out a statement about its presidency of COP24. Predictably, the Polish government’s statement makes no mention of the necessity of keeping fossil fuels in the ground in order to address the climate crisis.
