Cameroon’s REDD plans critiqued by NGOs ahead of World Bank meeting

Parallel worlds: Illegal logging and REDD in Cameroon

Progress on addressing illegal logging in Cameroon has stalled since 2010. That’s one of the findings of a new report from the British think tank Chatham House. The report is one of the series of reports on illegal logging that Chatham House has produced in recent years.

“If REDD is to happen, then the solution is about the payment for environmental services and the price of the carbon compared with the logs. Logs are priced in the market at $US100 per cubic metre of log. It would have to be $US70 per tonne of carbon to compete. Who will pay? If the price is below the [price of a] log, nobody wants to sell. They just cut the trees … It is a question of economics, not a question of conservation.”
