By Chris Lang In December 2019, the governments of Colombia, Norway, Germany, and the UK signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on REDD and promoting sustainable development in Colombia. In August 2020, Ricardo José Lozano Picón, Colombia’s minister for Environment and Sustainable Development wrote to Mary Grady at Winrock International, to tell her that Colombia…

“Great news for the environment!” The aviation industry weakens carbon offsetting scheme even further
By Chris Lang The International Civil Aviation Organization‘s Council agreed yesterday to change the baseline year for its Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Under CORSIA, airlines were supposed to buy carbon credits to offset their emissions above a baseline of the average emissions in 2019 and 2020.

The aviation industry is avoiding its climate commitments while manipulating the price of carbon offsets downwards
By Chris Lang Before the coronavirus crisis, greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation industry were among the fastest growing of any industry. Yet there is no mention of the aviation sector in the Paris Agreement. Instead, in 2016, the UN International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) announced that aviation would go “carbon neutral” from 2020.

The International Civil Avitation Organisation should reject the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility from its offsetting scheme (as well as rejecting all other offsets, of course)
By Chris Lang In 2016, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) announced that it would create a carbon offsetting scheme, thus creating the impression of doing something about the climate crisis, while allowing the aviation industry’s emissions from burning fossil fuels to increase massively.

“Aviation will try anything apart from leaving fossil fuels in the ground”
By Chris Lang For several years, REDD-Monitor has been raising the alarm about the aviation industry’s crazy plans to increase its greenhouse gas emissions massively using carbon offsets as a substitute for meaningful action to address the climate crisis.
